I am a Post Doc at the Unit for Applied Epistemology and Philosophy of Science at the Philosophy Department of the University of Vienna. In my current project I try to make sense of the notion of "epistemic system." I develop a practice-based account of epistemic principle-following inspired by the sociology of scientific knowledge as well as feminist political epistemology. I focus specifically on knowledge about testosterone, interviewing different communities who either prescribe or use testosterone (or both). My aim is to develop a multi-faceted account of epistemic systems that incorporates social dynamics, power structure, but also ontological assumptions. I consider my approach qualitative empirical epistemology since I make use of social science methods to generate philosophical hypotheses.
Besides my focus on epistemic relativism, I have also worked on scientific pluralism, the history and philosophy of small RNA biology, inheritance & evolution, units of selection, lineages, the role of theory in scientific debates, as well as the philosophy of invertebrate immunology. Most of my endeavours include empirical studies, such as expert interviews or ethnography.
I care a lot about methods in philosophy of science. Having studied comparative literature, microbiology, and immunology before starting my PhD in philosophy of science it was hard for me to grasp how to actually do philosophy. Quite generally, I think that philosophers often talk too little about how they practice their craft. To address this, Adrian Currie and I are editing a volume on Methods in the Philosophy of Science to be published with MIT Press in early 2025. If you are interested in chatting about methods - Feel free to contact me!
I teach courses, seminars as well as lectures in Philosophy of Science and Epistemology. Occasionally, I teach informal logic.
I am involved in several academic initiatives such as UPSalon and the Anti-Racism Working Group at the University of Vienna and the international Critical Political Epistemology Network. I am also a board member of AIDS Help Vienna. When I am not philosophizing in the armchair I perform as the philosopher-turned-wrestler Dr. Diotima. I've already wrestled in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary, Liechtenstein and Israel. I am the European Wrestling Association's Newcomer of the Year 2023. In march 2024 I organized Austria's first queerfeminist wrestling show - FLINTA Fightclub.
